Our public sector client, in Perth, is seeking Data Engineer for a contract engagement to help develop and enhance a large-scale data platform.
You'll be focusing on hands-on software engineering, building and improving Python-based systems that support the full data lifecycle including ingestion, transformation, validation, quality assurance, and secure delivery of sensitive datasets. You will work closely with senior engineers and technical peers to implement defined technical improvements, enhance pipeline performance, and improve code quality, scalability, and maintainability.
What You'll be Doing
- Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable Python software supporting data platform infrastructure
- Enhance and extend existing codebases, addressing technical debt and improving maintainability
- Develop and improve pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, validation, and delivery
- Implement automation and tooling to streamline data access, metadata management, and quality assurance
- Support improvements to encryption, security, and access controls for sensitive data
- Contribute to enhancements such as parallel processing, data filtering, and automated reporting
- Collaborate closely with software engineers, data engineers, and technical stakeholders
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices, tooling, and processes
What You'll Bring
- Strong hands-on software development experience using Python, with a focus on clean, maintainable code
- Experience with the Python data engineering ecosystem (e.g., data processing, orchestration, validation, integration libraries/frameworks)
- Experience developing software in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
- Proven experience working with and improving existing production codebases

Experience building or enhancing systems supporting:
- Data ingestion and transformation
- Data delivery and access management
- Metadata management and automation
- Strong understanding of secure coding practices, especially when handling sensitive data
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand complex data flows
- Ability to work effectively in a highly technical, collaborative engineering environment
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with data-intensive platforms or large-scale data pipelines
- Experience in public sector or highly regulated environments
- Relevant qualifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Engineering, or equivalent experience
