Are you a passionate, hands-on AI practitioner with a knack for software engineering and a desire to build production-grade, agent-enabled AI systems at scale? Do you thrive on designing intelligent solutions that can reason, plan, use tools, and operate reliably in real-world environments? If so, we want to hear from you. Be part of a transformative journey, shaping how AI is designed, built, and deployed to create meaningful impact in the Brisbane community and beyond.
In this senior, individual contributor role, you will leverage your expertise in data science, AI, and software engineering to develop and deliver sophisticated agent-based and large language model (LLM) enabled AI solutions within the Microsoft technology stack, including Azure and Microsoft AI Foundry. Reporting directly to the AI Manager, you will collaborate closely with engineers, stakeholders, and fellow data scientists to turn complex business challenges into scalable, safe, and governed AI products that matter.
What You'll Do:
- Design, develop, and maintain innovative agentic AI systems, including multi-agent architectures utilizing LLMs, tools, memory, and workflows.
- Build production-ready AI solutions employing best practices in coding, APIs, integrations, and scalable deployment.
- Create intelligent agents capable of reasoning, planning, tool use, and reflection, integrating with governed tool interfaces and Model Context Protocol (MCP)-style patterns.
- Lead proofs of concept, pilots, and full-scale operational solutions on the Microsoft cloud ecosystem—from initial ideation to live deployment.
- Translate complex business needs into well-structured AI solutions with clear success metrics and evaluation strategies.
- Contribute to AI safety, governance, and assurance efforts, including output evaluation, monitoring, logging, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Produce comprehensive documentation covering architecture, design decisions, risks, and outcomes.
Required Skills:
- 5+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, AI, or software engineering.
- Strong hands-on coding proficiency in Python (R skills are a plus), with experience in Git, CI/CD, and modern deployment practices.
- Proven expertise developing LLM-enabled systems, including prompt engineering, RAG techniques, tool invocation, MCP-based agent integration, and agent frameworks.
- Experience designing and implementing agentic workflows such as task decomposition, planning, memory management, and orchestration.
- Ability to craft clean abstractions and reusable components aligned with production-quality software design patterns.
- Excellent debugging, problem-solving, and capability to troubleshoot complex behaviors across data, models, and system integrations.
- Experience deploying end-to-end AI/ML solutions on cloud platforms, notably Azure, including data management, APIs, and monitoring.
- Proficiency working with structured and unstructured data in various formats (SQL, CSV, JSON, APIs, logs).
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate technical solutions to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated independence in solving ambiguous problems with creativity and sound engineering judgment.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have Skills:
- Experience with agent frameworks, orchestration patterns, multi-agent systems, and MCP-style tool discovery.
- Knowledge of MLOps / LLMOps pipelines, experiment tracking, and model lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with integrating AI agents with enterprise APIs and systems, including security and governance considerations.
- Awareness of performance, cost, and scalability trade-offs in large language and agentic systems.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, containers (Docker), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Background in NLP, decision support, or predictive analytics.
- Ability to develop asynchronous or concurrent code for scalable AI workloads.
- Up-to-date knowledge of emerging agentic AI techniques, tools, and responsible AI practices.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience in AI and software development.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to work in a collaborative environment alongside multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to AI safety, ethics, and responsible deployment practices.
- Proficiency in English and strong communication skills.
