We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Cyber Operations Security Expert to oversee and enhance the security of vital systems supporting Australia's public services. In this essential leadership position, you will drive proactive cyber security operations, manage investigations, threat hunting, incident responses, and implement strategic security controls. Your expertise will help maintain robust protections and support strategic national priorities, all while working within a flexible hybrid framework.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in IT or cybersecurity, with at least 3 years in senior management or architecture roles
  • Proven experience leading high severity cyber investigations, threat hunting, and crisis management
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud security platforms (Azure and AWS), Zero Trust Network Architectures, and DevSecOps frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement security programmes aligned with global standards such as NIST, ISO 27001, and critical frameworks like the Australian ASD Essential Eight
  • Expertise in security tools including Sentinel, Microsoft Defender 365, Azure Security Centre, and Splunk
  • Skilled in incident response, computer forensics, log analysis, data loss prevention, and vulnerability management
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop security teams to foster a resilient security culture

Nice to Have Skills

  • Familiarity with Security Incident and Event Management systems and log aggregation tools
  • In-depth understanding of the Information Security Manual (ISM) and cyber security best practices
  • Experience applying incident response frameworks such as NIST SP 800-61 and Mitre Attack
  • Industry certifications such as Azure or AWS Security certifications, Splunk Certified, or equivalent qualifications

Preferred Educational Foundations and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in information technology, cyber security, or related fields
  • Industry-recognised certifications validating expertise in security architecture, cloud security, or SIEM systems

Other Requirements

  • Ability to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance
  • Australian citizenship (evidence required during pre-engagement)
  • This role is open to candidates based in Canberra or Melbourne
  • Hybrid working arrangements are available, subject to negotiation, with a minimum of three days per week in the office
  • Contract Duration: 18 months, with an option for a subsequent extension of another 18 months
