M365 Lead Engineer – Secure Collaboration Program

We are seeking an experienced M365 Lead Engineer to take a pivotal role in the design, governance, and delivery oversight of a next-generation Microsoft 365 (M365) collaboration environment. This is a landmark program enabling secure, scalable, and compliant collaboration across government, industry, and partner organisations.
About the role
As the M365 Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for defining the architecture, providing technical governance, and guiding delivery across the full lifecycle —design, build, deploy, and sustain. Working closely with program managers, cyber security and compliance teams, and senior stakeholders, you will ensure the platform meets strategic, technical, and governance objectives.
You will set the technical direction, approve key design decisions, and represent engineering in high-level forums. This is a leadership-focused engineering role with hands-on accountability for ensuring the M365 environment is robust, resilient, and compliant with government security standards.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the overall architecture and secure design of the M365 collaboration environment.
- Provide technical governance and oversight across design, delivery, and operations.
- Engage with program managers, business stakeholders, and cyber security teams.
- Approve technical decisions and manage delivery risk across phases.
- Represent engineering in executive, governance, and stakeholder forums.
- Oversee cross-team coordination and resolve escalated technical issues.
Extended technical responsibilities
- Tenant design and landing zone configuration.
- License strategy development and cost optimisation.
- Change & release management oversight.
- Documentation standards and lifecycle governance.
- Resilience, backup, and data lifecycle planning.
- Platform engineering and developer experience optimisation
Skills & experience
We are looking for candidates with:
- Extensive experience leading design and delivery of Microsoft 365 services in complex or secure environments.
- Proven expertise in tenant architecture, governance, and lifecycle management.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to operate at both technical and executive levels.
- Knowledge of government cyber security and compliance frameworks(ISM, PSPF, IRAP, or equivalent).
- Understanding of Cyber GRC, Zero Trust, and federated identity models.
- Experience with licensing optimisation, resilience planning, and platform engineering practices.
- Australian citizenship with an active security clearance (NV1 or higher) is essential.
