Job Description:
A Systems Engineer II is a technical position that requires an individual to work as part of a TEAM in the 24x7 Network Operations Centre (NOC), where they will be expected to follow direction while performing most tasks on their own. Tasks involve working with and supporting the NOC 24x7 team, supporting the client's production, QA and Development environments and ensuring the client’s critical infrastructure adheres to its stringent SLA requirements. An Engineer II’s primary responsibility will be to monitor and/or resolve alarms, open corresponding tickets, diagnose and document the issue, take escalations from junior engineers, follow SOPs, and escalate as needed.
The proper skill set for this position will consist of a combination of System Administration (Linux/Unix) and Network (Cisco and Juniper) troubleshooting capabilities.
The right candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, as well as a processes and procedures individual.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Troubleshoot and Support Enterprise Linux-based production systems and infrastructure, including physical and virtual server infrastructure.
- Utilise standard Linux shell commands to diagnose Tier I/II issues on Production systems, including file systems, running processes, system utilisation, and network conditions.
- Troubleshoot Linux/Unix service and run-time symptoms using standard Linux commands.
- Competency in managing Linux file systems and retrieving and analysing logs.
- Conduct routine Enterprise patching of production/non-production environments.
- Develop scripts using operational tools such as Python, Splunk, or other scripting languages and tools.
- Handle inquiries received from customers by telephone, email, or ticketing system (ServiceNow).
- Monitor system and network alarms via Netcool/Nagios.
- Perform research, analysis and isolation of alarms that require escalation, additional research and/or triage.
- Publish information to the knowledge base. (Confluence, Wiki)
- Adhere to Service Level Agreements (SLA), Operational Level Agreements (OLA) and internal processes.
- Track all interactions within the ticketing system. Route tickets to appropriate internal departments for further assistance.
- Escalate issues in a timely manner.
- Attempt to resolve issues on first contact.
- Where applicable, enhance processes to be more effective and efficient.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Effectively communicate with our customers by composing accurate, prompt replies to customer email and phone inquiries.
- Display consistent professional demeanour and clarity when interacting internally and externally.
- Adhere to attendance policy.
Experience / Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent experience
- CCNA or RHCSA certification
- 1 - 3 years of networking or systems support experience
- Experience with LAN/WAN environment and troubleshooting.
- Experience with Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems.
- Experience with TCP/IP, DNS, NetFlow, SNMP and internet protocols.
- Experience with IP addressing and TCP/UDP ports.
- Experience with BGP and OSPF routing protocols.
- Previous experience in a Network Operations Centre
Other desired qualifications:
- Experience with router and switch infrastructure.
- Experience with a variety of network monitoring and administrative tools.
- Familiarity with DDoS attacks.
- Experience with Linux command line and VIM editing.
- Experience as a System Administrator and/or Network Administrator.
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service soft skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
