We are building a capability-led engineering function focused on evaluating, designing, and evolving complex technology services at scale.

This role is suited to a senior engineer, architect, or principal-level practitioner who operates comfortably in ambiguity and brings strong technical judgement to guide service design, modernisation pathways, and engineering decision-making.

You will work across multiple systems and stakeholders to define what should be retained, modernised, or transitioned, supported by deep technical analysis, structured documentation, and evidence-based recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide independent engineering advice to shape service and architecture decisions
  • Define technical scope, assumptions, and design options across complex environments
  • Develop service designs, architecture views, and supporting artefacts
  • Establish baseline models of current services vs infrastructure
  • Assess feasibility, risks, constraints, and trade-offs across multiple options
  • Shape modernisation and transition strategies for existing services
  • Contribute to validation approaches, including testing and assurance planning
  • Document dependencies, constraints, and engineering rationale to support governance and investment decisions

Skills & Experience

  • Experience operating as a Principal Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Solution/Technical Architect
  • Strong background in complex, enterprise-scale environments with multiple dependencies
  • Ability to influence through technical expertise and structured advice, not authority
  • Deep experience in:
    • Service design and architecture
    • Systems engineering and integration
    • Large-scale infrastructure and platform environments
  • Strong capability in analysis, modelling, and technical documentation
  • Experience working within structured governance, assurance, and compliance frameworks
  • Comfortable working under broad direction with accountability for complex outputs

Requirements

  • Must hold active NV1 clearance
  • Based in Canberra

Why This Role

This is a decision-shaping role. You will operate at the intersection of engineering, architecture, and strategy, influencing how complex services evolve through technical insight, structured analysis, and defensible recommendations.
