Senior Software Engineer (App Support)

Role Purpose
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer (App Support) with strong engineering experience who takes end-to-end ownership of live, production SaaS systems, ensuring their reliability, supportability, and effective operation for our clients, using AI and automation pragmatically to improve incident response and operational efficiency.

As a senior escalation point, you will diagnose and resolve complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive long-term engineering improvements in close collaboration with clients, engineers, and product and platform teams.

Domain Experience (Desirable)
Utilities experience will be considered favourably.

Key Responsibilities

Application Support & Operations

  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex application issues in production environments
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents efficiently, balancing short-term fixes with long-term engineering improvements
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventative solutions to reduce recurring incidents
  • Identify systemic production issues and lead longer-term remediation initiatives
  • Improve application observability through logging, monitoring, alerting, and diagnostics
  • Use automation and AI-assisted tools to streamline support processes, reduce manual intervention, and improve mean time to resolution (MTTR)
  • Engage with clients to provide incident updates and explain RCA findings to non-technical stakeholders
  • Participate in a rotating on-call support roster

AI-Applied Engineering

  • Apply AI tools and services to accelerate development, improve quality, and reduce manual effort
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g. code generation, test generation, refactoring, analysis) responsibly within enterprise standards

Quality, Security & Reliability

  • Support production stability through proactive monitoring, alert tuning, and performance optimisation
  • Contribute to operational resilience, availability, and incident reduction metrics
  • Embed security, performance, and quality considerations into everyday development

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work within agile, cross-functional teams alongside Product Owners, BAs, QAs, and DevOps
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute positively to team capability uplift

Required Experience & Skills
Development Support Background

  • Experience supporting and maintaining business-critical applications in production environments
  • Strong debugging and problem isolation skills across distributed systems
  • Strong knowledge of Java backend development, with hands-on experience using the Play Framework and SBT preferred
  • Proficiency in MySQL (or similar), or strong SQL skills for writing efficient queries, stored procedures, and database optimization
  • Experience with APIs, microservices, and cloud-based architectures
  • Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (Angular)
  • Familiarity with on-call rotations and incident management practices

AI-Applied Capability

  • Hands-on experience using AI tools within the SDLC
  • Understanding of where AI adds value vs. where traditional engineering approaches are more appropriate

Cloud & DevOps

  • Experience working in AWS, Azure, or GCP environments
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure-aware development
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana & CloudWatch

Ways of Working

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a practical mindset
  • Comfortable working in regulated, security-conscious environments
  • Clear communicator who can work across technical and non-technical stakeholders
