The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator to join an established Application Hosting team supporting business-critical applications within a large enterprise environment.
You will play a key role in supporting and enhancing the Windows, SQL Server and web-hosting platforms that underpin essential business applications.
The position combines hands-on systems administration, operational support, automation, cloud infrastructure, project delivery and technical leadership. It would suit an experienced Microsoft infrastructure professional who enjoys improving enterprise platforms and developing solutions through PowerShell, Terraform and modern DevOps practices.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Administer Windows, SQL and web-server environments, including provisioning, configuration, monitoring and support
- Support Windows Server, SQL Server 2012–2025, IIS and related Microsoft hosting technologies
- Administer Microsoft monitoring and configuration-management platforms, including alerts, system monitoring, patching and deployments
- Manage Active Directory services, including Group Policy, security groups and identity administration
- Support Azure and AWS infrastructure, including virtual machines, EC2, Azure SQL PaaS and SQL Managed Instance
- Maintain the stability, reliability, availability and performance of supported platforms
- Troubleshoot incidents and resolve day-to-day operational issues
- Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts, Azure Automation Runbooks, Terraform code and GitHub Actions workflows
- Use GitHub to store, manage and version-control scripts and infrastructure code
- Produce and maintain procedural, technical and system documentation
- Identify and implement improvements to system performance, reliability and operational efficiency
- Lead or contribute to infrastructure upgrades, platform migrations and new technology implementations
- Produce system-design documentation across the team’s technology stack
- Assess emerging technologies and contribute to strategic platform planning
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring and knowledge sharing to team members
- Collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders to deliver reliable, high-quality services
Essential experience
To be successful, you will demonstrate:
- Strong experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments
- Strong experience supporting and administering Microsoft SQL Server
- Experience supporting enterprise web-hosting environments, including IIS
- Intermediate to advanced PowerShell scripting skills
- Experience writing scripts that include conditional logic, functions, testing and error handling
- Experience using GitHub for source control and script management
- Strong troubleshooting and structured problem-solving capabilities
- The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- The ability to work effectively both independently and within a technical team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to explain technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- A commitment to documentation, mentoring and knowledge sharing
Highly desirable
Experience or knowledge across any of the following will be viewed favourably:
- Microsoft Azure infrastructure and platform services
- Azure virtual machines, Azure SQL PaaS and SQL Managed Instance
- Amazon Web Services, including EC2
- Terraform and infrastructure as code

- CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies
- Git workflows and version-control practices
- Microsoft monitoring, configuration and deployment tools

- System design and technical architecture documentation
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect
Candidates are not expected to have experience across every desirable technology. The team will support the successful candidate in strengthening relevant knowledge gaps.

Working arrangements
Flexible working arrangements are available, subject to operational requirements and agreement between all parties.
The successful contractor will be required to:
- Attend the primary Brisbane office on the team’s anchor days of Monday and Friday
- Meet a minimum office-attendance requirement of 50% per fortnight
- Attend other approved offices, project workshops or customer locations when required
- Travel to other sites within Queensland where necessary
- Maintain stable and reliable internet connectivity when working remotely
- Comply with workplace health and safety requirements when working from home or another approved location
Hours, maintenance and on-call requirements
The contractor will work up to 40 ordinary hours per week and must not exceed this without prior approval.
The role participates in an operational duty roster, which may include:
- Morning roster: 7:30 am to 12:30 pm
- Afternoon roster: 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm
The successful candidate will also be required to:
- Perform scheduled system-maintenance activities outside ordinary business hours
- Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call roster
- Provide 24/7 on-call coverage during an allocated one-week roster period
- Perform approved after-hours work in addition to ordinary working hours
