Now is the time to find a new job – here’s why

The ‘Great Resignation’ has continued into the second half of 2022, and competition for candidates is at an all-time high. PwC’s recent ‘What Workers Want’ report states that 38% of workers surveyed are currently looking for a new job – up approximately 30% from February 2021 (Australian Bureau of Statistics).

If you are considering looking for a new role, now is the perfect time – there are a lot of new opportunities, flexibility is on offer, and good candidates are highly sought after.

So, how can you take advantage of the current candidate short market?

Take the next step

If you are thinking about advancing your career and taking a step up, now could be the time. With candidate shortages across the board, many employers are considering alternative options to fill roles. Even though you might be less experienced than a role requires, employers are more likely to be open to the proposition of hiring and upskilling you, or giving you a chance at a more senior role. To take advantage of this, make sure you put together a compelling cover letter. Make it clear in your CV that you want to take the next step - and are willing to do the hard work to get there.

Negotiate

Because good candidates are so sought after at the moment, it puts you in a great position to negotiate your terms with your new employer. Whether its flexibility that you are after, a higher salary or extra employee benefits, you are in a great position to put forward what you want out of your next role. At Paxus, we are able to help you negotiate your offer, with our experienced Account Managers assisting candidates throughout the recruitment process - right through to negotiating your new terms.

Put together a killer pitch

To take advantage of all the great opportunities out there, you need to know how best to sell yourself - without overdoing it. Work out what your strengths are, and what sets you apart from other candidates who are also going for the role. Practise talking about yourself and your strengths, so you feel comfortable in the interview. This includes talking about your past roles, some of your work related achievements, and examples of where you have come up with a solution to a work based problem.

Be bold

With such a candidate short market, this is your opportunity to pick and choose which company you want to work for. It’s not just about getting the first job that comes your way – now is the time to think about what you really value in a role and an organisation. Think about what types of questions you can ask a prospective employer to help you decide this. You could ask your interviewer “What do you love about working for your organisation?”, “What do people at your organisation value?”, “What is the best part about the culture at your organisation?” and so on.

Use your networks

Networking can be a great way to land a new job, and take advantage of the current job market. Whether you are scrolling through LinkedIn and chatting to people virtually, or heading to networking and industry events, think about the people you might know, and if there are any opportunities. When meeting new people, always remember to stay in touch – this can sometimes simply mean liking and sharing some of their content on LinkedIn – or just touching base to stay front of mind.

Get out there

There are so many opportunities at the moment, and if you are looking to make a change, now is the perfect time! If you’re looking for a job in Melbourne, you may have noticed that the hiring process feels a little slower this year. But slower hiring doesn’t mean businesses have stopped hiring. According to Harje Kaur, Account Manager at Paxus, Melbourne based employers are simply taking more time to identify the right candidate, particularly when it comes to finding someone who is the right fit for the team. Employers Are Being More Selective Rather than rushing to fill vacancies, businesses are taking a more considered approach to recruitment. Employers are looking for candidates who tick the right boxes across skills, experience and team fit. As a result, recruitment processes can take longer, with more consideration given to whether a candidate can deliver genuine value to the business. For candidates, this means the job search may require a little more patience. But there are still quality opportunities available across the Melbourne market. Quality over quantity when applying for jobs When hiring processes are taking longer, it can be tempting to respond by sending out as many applications as possible. Instead, candidates should focus on quality over quantity. Rather than tailoring your CV and application to every job description word-for-word, focus on demonstrating what you have achieved and the value you could bring to the organisation. Consider: What have you achieved? Go beyond listing your responsibilities and highlight measurable outcomes. What makes you different? Identify the skills, experience or perspective that set you apart. What value can you bring? Think about how your experience could solve a problem, improve a process or contribute to the team's goals. Employers want to understand not just what you've done, but what impact you could have in their business. What Job Seekers Should Focus On A slower recruitment process can be frustrating, but it shouldn't discourage candidates from pursuing opportunities. The Melbourne job market continues to offer opportunities for skilled professionals. The key is to be strategic about where you apply and how you position yourself. Don't just tell employers what you've done. Show them what you achieved, what you can bring to the table and why you're the right fit for their team. Looking for your next opportunity in Melbourne? The Paxus team works with organisations across Melbourne and Australia to connect skilled professionals with opportunities across technology, digital, finance, sales and marketing. Whether you're actively looking for your next role or want to understand what's happening in the Melbourne employment market, talk to the Paxus team about your next career move or search available jobs here .

You’re getting the interviews, but you’re constantly coming in second. If you’re regularly securing interviews but just missing out on the role, your CV probably isn’t the problem. The next step is looking at what happens once you’re in the interview room. In this competitive job market, getting an interview is an achievement. But when several candidates have similar skills and experience, how you communicate, prepare and connect in the interview will make a real difference. Nathan Coller, Senior Account Director at Paxus, shares three practical interview tips to help you stand out from the competition. 1. Pitch with Purpose One of the best ways to start an interview confidently is to have a clear 60-second pitch prepared. Think about three things: Who are you? What skills and experience do you bring? What differentiates you from other candidates? Your pitch shouldn’t simply be a summary of your resume. Instead, tailor it to the role and the organisation. Think about what the employer needs and highlight the experience and strengths you have that directly address those needs. A strong introduction gives the interviewer a clear understanding of your value from the outset and sets the tone for the rest of your conversation. 2. Prepare Beyond the Job Description Reading the job description is essential, but it shouldn’t be the end of your interview preparation. Take the time to research the company, its priorities and the people interviewing you. Look at their professional backgrounds and previous experience. You may discover common connections, shared industries, projects or areas of interest that can help you build rapport. This research can also help you ask more relevant questions and tailor your answers to the organisation, rather than giving generic interview responses. 3. Make Your Connection Count Skills and experience matter, but an interview is also an opportunity to show who you are. Focus on building rapport early. Be yourself, bring some personality and show some energy. The goal isn’t to deliver perfectly rehearsed answers, it’s to have a genuine conversation and leave the interviewer with a strong sense of what it would be like to work with you. Your questions can also help you stand out. Try asking: “What would success look like in the first three-six months?” Or, towards the end of the interview: “Is there anything I haven’t answered today that I can elaborate on?” These questions demonstrate curiosity and give you one final opportunity to address any concerns or reinforce your suitability for the role. From Interview to Job Offer If you’re consistently making it to interview stage but missing out on the offer, don’t assume you need to completely overhaul your CV or start applying for more roles. Instead, look at what you can improve between getting the interview and getting the job. Are you clearly communicating your value? Have you done enough research? Are you tailoring your responses? And, perhaps most importantly, are you making a genuine connection with the people interviewing you? Small changes to your interview preparation can make a significant difference. Pitch with purpose. Prepare properly. Make your connection count. Looking for your next opportunity?
