Job description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Unix Systems Specialist to support a large-scale transformation program within one of our prominent higher education clients. This contract role will backfill existing technical resources and play a critical role in ensuring ongoing server and storage stability during a major university merger.
Working within the client's Server and Storage Services team and reporting to the Server & Storage Lead, the specialist will focus on delivering day-to-day Unix/Linux support-including Red Hat Linux administration, NFS troubleshooting, and queue-based support-while also collaborating across teams on core infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver daily Unix/Linux system administration services in an enterprise environment.
- Manage NFS configurations, Unix filesystems, and storage mount points.
- Resolve support tickets and escalations within a multi-platform infrastructure team.
- Participate in a rotating on-call support roster including evenings and weekends.
- Support operational continuity during a major business and technology integration project.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience in Unix/Linux server administration.
- Proven capability with NFS (Network File System) and general Unix filesystem layouts.
- Prior experience managing large-scale Red Hat Linux environments.
- Ability to operate in a structured IT environment using incident queues and support processes.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with Red Hat Satellite and Ansible for automation.
- Knowledge of Red Hat Directory Server (LDAP).
- Prior experience supporting IT infrastructure in the higher education or public sector is highly desirable.
Qualifications
Candidates should have one of the following:
- Postgraduate qualifications (or progress towards) in Information Technology or Computer Science, with relevant experience; OR
- Extensive hands-on experience in a comparable infrastructure role; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and practical expertise.
