About the Role:

We are seeking a highly capable and experienced Design Manager to lead multi-disciplinary engineering design teams across major infrastructure projects. This leadership role will act as the primary engineering representative within project teams, ensuring the delivery of timely, accurate, and value-for-money design outcomes that align with technical, safety, and sustainability standards.

The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership presence, a passion for technical excellence, and the ability to challenge and engage stakeholders to drive effective design delivery using lean principles.


Key Responsibilities:



Safety & Compliance

  • Drive and uphold a strong safety-first culture across all stages of the design process.

  • Ensure full compliance with Safety in Design (SID) and Sustainability in Design (SuiD) principles.

  • Embed safety considerations across all technical documentation and deliverables.



Engineering Delivery

  • Lead technical design teams across disciplines to deliver consistent and fit-for-purpose outputs.

  • Develop and manage project-specific design plans, ensuring all milestones, cost, and quality targets are met.

  • Oversee quality assurance and verification processes in line with organisational technical standards.

  • Track and report on design variations and delivery timelines to ensure accountability.



Stakeholder & Customer Engagement

  • Work with internal teams to scope and resource complex design projects.

  • Collaborate with project managers, technical specialists, and external consultants to deliver client-focused solutions.

  • Clearly communicate design risks, costs, and impacts to decision-makers.

  • Keep stakeholders informed through regular progress reporting and change control processes.



People & Culture

  • Mentor and support high-performing design teams, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.

  • Engage subject matter experts and cross-functional teams to optimise design outcomes.

  • Participate in performance planning and development with team leadership.



Innovation & Standards

  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, documentation templates, and delivery systems.

  • Identify and apply emerging technologies and innovative approaches where appropriate.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of multi-disciplinary design processes.


Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (B.Eng or equivalent) - Essential

  • Experience in engineering design and review, ideally within infrastructure or utility sectors - Essential

  • Strong leadership presence with a track record of inspiring technical teams and engaging constructively with stakeholders - Essential

  • Skilled in strategic planning, delivery optimisation, and risk management - Essential

  • Proven experience with Safety in Design frameworks - Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to challenge and influence - Essential

  • Strong report writing and documentation skills - Essential

  • Experience auditing technical designs and reports - Desirable

  • Project Management qualifications or equivalent experience - Desirable
