Job Opportunity: Networking and Cyber Specialist
Location: Canberra
Security Clearance: Baseline (minimum), NV1 desirable
Employment Type: 6 months contract with 2x 6 months extension option
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Networking and Cyber Specialist to join a dynamic and high-performing team in a federal government agency. This role is crucial to ensuring the availability, reliability and security of ICT systems supporting national operations.
As the Networking and Cyber Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in managing core network infrastructure, supporting WAN and internet connectivity, and strengthening cybersecurity posture through advanced protective measures, compliance alignment and threat detection.
Key Responsibilities
* Configure, deploy, monitor and maintain networking equipment (e.g. switches, routers, firewalls)
* Implement and maintain security protocols and ensure compliance with PSPF, ISM, and Essential 8 Maturity Level 2
* Support and fine-tune SIEM platforms (e.g. Microsoft Sentinel) to analyse logs and detect anomalies
* Report and assist in the investigation of security incidents
* Collaborate with other teams to align IT security with organisational goals
* Provide senior-level technical support to Project Services teams
* Draft and review technical architectural documentation incorporating cyber protections
* Mentor and support capability uplift in ICT and cyber teams
* Contribute to ICT strategic direction, technology selection and continuous improvement
* Maintain and evolve SOPs, monitoring/reporting tools and other operational resources
Required Technical Skills & Experience
* Minimum 3 years' experience in a similar role
* Strong hands-on experience with:
o Fortinet, Zscaler, Microsoft Sentinel
o Other Microsoft security technologies (please list)
o Additional security/networking tools (please specify)
* Demonstrated experience in:
o Network configuration and management (switches, firewalls, routers)
o Cybersecurity implementation in enterprise or government environments
o Scripting and automation (e.g. PowerShell, BASH, KQL, Python, DevOps, IOC)
* Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
* Minimum 6 months' experience using ServiceNow for ITSM
Mandatory Qualifications & Requirements
* Associate-level Microsoft certification (e.g. Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate - please specify)
* Baseline Security Clearance (minimum)
* Bachelor's degree or formal IT qualifications
* NV1 Security Clearance
* Experience in managing IT infrastructure, Windows/Linux administration
* Industry certifications (e.g. ITIL, Fortinet NSE, Zscaler Certified, Microsoft Expert-level - please specify)
* Experience configuring and maintaining ServiceNow
* Demonstrated experience in automation and orchestration (please specify tools)
* Outcome- and customer-focused mindset
* Strong verbal and written communication, including translating technical details for non-technical audiences
* Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a team environment
* Strong organisation and task prioritisation skills
